New NYCOSH Executive Director

Obernauer Replaces Shufro as Head of NYCOSH:

Charlene Obernauer has been named executive director of the New York Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, replacing Joel Shufro, who cofounded the organization in 1978 and has served as executive director for most of its 35-year history.

Obernauer, a native of Stony Brook, N.Y., has been an advocate and organizer for worker and immigrant rights. She joins the NYCOSH staff from Long Island Jobs with Justice, where she has served as executive director since 2009.

Shufro said Obernauer would bring new energy to NYCOSH, a membership organization of workers, unions, community-based organizations, health and legal professionals and other activists promoting safe and healthy workplaces.

During her tenure at Long Island Jobs with Justice, Obernauer participated in efforts to organize Walmart workers and worked to ensure that workers involved in the cleanup of Hurricane Sandy were properly paid and protected.

NYCOSH has a staff of 11 and membership of about 200 unions and 300 individuals. Shufro said Obernauer’s skills would help her "transform NYCOSH into a more activist organization."
