Manhattan Jewelry Maker Faces Large Fines

OSHA Proposes $47,600 Fine for Manhattan Jewelry Maker:

A women’s jewelry and accessories maker in Manhattan faces $47,600 in proposed fines from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration for exposing workers to fire and safety hazards at its 254 W. 35th St. location, OSHA said Wednesday.

Natasha Accessories Ltd. was cited for blocked exits, propped-open fire doors, lack of emergency exit lighting in stairways, obstructed sprinkler heads, slip and fall hazards, electrical hazards and unsafely stacked boxes.

OSHA said it also found hazards similar to those found during an inspection of another company location nearby in 2011. Those included a failure to properly mark emergency exits.

Natasha faces eight serious and three repeat violations, OSHA said. The company has 15 days to comply with the terms of the penalties, meet with an OSHA area director or contest the proposed fine before an independent panel.
