Bar in Hell's Kitchen Violates Law

State: NY

Gay Bar in Hell's Kitchen Closed for Workers' Comp Violations

The New York Police Department on May 9 raided and shut down the Fairytail Lounge, a popular gay bar in the Hell’s Kitchen area on the west side of Manhattan, for failing to provide workers’ compensation benefits for its employees.

It was the fourth NYPD raid on the hotspot since it was shut down in December for operating without a liquor license, according to the website DNAinfo New York.

After the December raid, the state Workers’ Compensation Board noted that the bar had stopped carrying workers’ compensation insurance on Oct. 13. It received a stop-work order April 3, which is still in effect, according to a WCB spokesman contacted by the website.

The bar currently owes the board $17,000 in fines, the spokesman said.

Police raided the Fairytail Lounge May 2 and May 7 before shutting it down May 9. All three times, the bar was allegedly open and serving customers in violation of the stop-work order, the website reported.

Owner Anthony Sciana told the website that the bar would soon reopen. "We had workers’ comp the whole time," Sciana said.
